Mission: empowering individuals, communities, and institutions to improve community health and development in Rwanda.
Strategies: include research aimed at providing evidence-based solutions to community challenges; community engagement; policy advocacy; provision of reproductive health information, clinical services, and legal aid; health systems strengthening.
Role in abortion policy: HDI spearheaded Rwanda’s abortion legal reform in 2018, which now allows abortion in cases of rape, incest, and forced marriage, if the girl is a minor or if the pregnancy pauses health risks for the woman.
